This phrase from Shakespeare describes just how I feel about this time of year. Nature is bursting with color and life: flowers that we won’t see again for a year are in full bloom – ranunculus, delphinium, peonies, and foxglove – and we can truly enjoy them. I hope you’re enjoying these fleeting days of great spring beauty.
Today’s post was a happy whim; usually when I go to the floral wholesalers I‘m on a mission with a list of things to find, but today I wandered around the cold rooms pulling together flowers that filled me with pleasure, for their color, rarity, or simplicity. Ranunculus are always lovely – but in these shades of pink, peach, and pale yellow? I might never see such rare specimens again. The rice flowers were new to me, a little like sedum but such a delicate shade of pale pink. And muscari – a memory of my grandmother’s garden, where they grew among the hyacinths, miniature versions of their fragrant neighbor.
Here are three different arrangements of these flowers – because you can never have too much inspiration when appreciating the infinite variety of flowers.
